Saturday's Race

NASA- Mid Atlantic's East Coast Honda Challenge helped put on a spectacular show as part of the weekends Hyperfest activities. The Hyperfest is NASA's feature race weekend of the season, bringing together all types of automotive enthusiasts for one big bash. From the car show to drifting, to a concert at the end of the night, the atmosphere tried to keep up with the on track action from the ECHC.

Turn one was the hot spot for all of the ECHC's action on Saturday. Chad Slagg's H1 Hybrid Civic blasted off the line as if shot out of a cannon to lead the pack into turn one. The whole group of Kevin Helms (hybrid Civic), Pete Curpier (hybrid Civic), Scot Burner (hybrid Civic) and Slagg swapped position all race, with Helms pulling it out in the end, edging out Chad who finished a close second and Burner in his S2000 in third. Adam Spingler put in another consistent and uncontested race to take all of the points in H3 with his yellow Prelude. The H4 class was host to more good racing on Saturday as Jon Kofod took the class win in his Integra LS. The battle for second was tight with Andrew Zimmerman and his Integra holding off the pressure applied all race long from the Accord piloted by Morgan Hitt. John Whitaker marked his return to the ECHC with a class win in H5 with his silver CRX. Second place was secured by Zephyr Belski and his Civic while Keith Edwards locked in third with his CRX after a consistent race.

Sunday's Race

The theme for the racing on Sunday was more like the local news: Traffic and Weather on the 8's. There were ominous clouds heading to the track but major precipitation had been holding off all day. The teams were unsure what was going to happen for the race so last minute decisions were being made for tires. Fortunately, the rain held off, but the traffic didn't. Negotiating through backmarkers made things a bit hairy for the H1 cars because of high closing speeds with the other groups in the race. Slagg was able to do the best job of bobbing and weaving and pulled out the H1 win, followed by Helms and Burner. H3 belonged to Adam Spingler again on Sunday; he may be getting a bit lonely out there and could use some company! Kofod repeated his Saturday performance with another H4 win, besting the CRX of Jerry Birchmore and Zimmerman's Integra. David Harrison came back from mechanical gremlins on Saturday to claim the H5 win with his CRX, putting in times that saw him finish in the mix of the H3/H4 battle. Whitaker was able to pull off second place and Belski rounded off the podium with third.

The Honda Challenge travels to historic Virginia International Raceway, this time on the North Course for the next round of the Honda Challenge. For more information, please visit www.honda-challenge.com. We look forward to seeing you there!
