Saturday's Race

The ECHC teamed up with the MWHC at BeaveRun for a fun-filled racing weekend. On Saturday the weather varied from misty to light rain for the better part of the day, so the drivers practiced and qualified in dreary wet conditions. With less than an hour to go before the race, the big decision was tires - would they be racing on intermediates, rains, or hopefully dry weather tires? The weather looked promising, so there was the hustle of racers all over the paddock changing tires at the last moment.

Warren Wang had the pole for the Saturday race, but on the warm-up lap an unfortunate spin did considerable damage to his car and he was finished for the weekend. By far the most exciting racing involved the battle between John Whitaker (#88) and James Evans (#5) in H1. Both drivers kept the pressure on each other the entire race, exchanging positions and keeping the fans in suspense. With only a few laps to go Whitaker and Evans were entering the back straight side by side with Whitaker on the inside and Evans to the outside, the #5 car ran out of track and #88 took the lead and continued on to win overall on Saturday. Other class winners for Saturday included Jason Franza (the Franzanator) in H2, Phil Phillips in H3, Jon Marhefka in H4, and David Harrison in H5.

Sunday's Race

Sunday turned out to be a perfect day for racing - mostly clear skies and a dry track. The pole went to James Evans. The H1 battle continued between Evans and Whitaker with Corey Jacobs on their tails. Whitaker was the overall winner for Sunday's race. Jason Franza in H2 ran a sizzling 1:06:862 lap to break the track record in his class. Other track records were set on Sunday as well - Phil Phillips set a track record for H3 with a 1:08:322 and Jon Marhefka broke his own track record in H4 with a 1:07:921.

ECHC Rookies are certainly making a fine showing this year - David Bowlin in H2 and Jon Kofod in H4 seem to be in the forefront - all in all setting the stage for an exciting weekend at Hyperfest at Summit Point on July 10 & 11 - see you there!

The East Coast Honda-Challenge would like to thank NASA-VA, BeaveRun Motorsports Complex, all corner workers, drivers, crew, and spectators for making Round Two so enjoyable.
